This International Women’s Day we wanted to take a moment to celebrate women in the world of Beer. Specifically, Female-Owned Breweries like Nirvana. When we think about brewing and beer consumption today, the image that often comes to mind is a male-dominated industry. However, this perception is changing and women are reclaiming their rightful place in the world of brewing.
Here at Nirvana Brewery, we’re not only the UK’s first alcohol-free brewery but also one of the few (but growing!) Female-Owned Breweries. We’re proud to be a part of this much-needed movement. Nirvana is not just about crafting exceptional alcohol-free beers; it’s about challenging stereotypes and proving that women belong at the forefront of this dynamic industry.
Nirvana as a Female-Owned Brewery
Becky Taylor-Kean is the woman behind Nirvana Brewery. Co-founder and owner of the brewery. She actively takes part in running the business and the creation of our new and innovative alcohol-free brews!
Becky’s adventure into alcohol-free brewing started with her dad going teetotal. With there being very few quality low and no beers on the market she took matters into her own hands and ended up starting Nirvana Brewery. It hasn’t been an easy journey but now she’s able to not only share delicious alcohol-free brews with her family, but with the world!
A Historical Perspective: Women in Brewing
Brewing wasn’t always seen as a male-dominated craft. In fact, women were some of the earliest brewers— often known as “alewives” (and potentially the origin of Witches, but that’s a story for another time 😉). With beer being the drink of choice when water quality wasn’t the best, it was usually brewed at home. Meaning it was women who perfected recipes and passed their knowledge down through generations. However, as brewing became industrialised and commercialised, it shifted into a male-dominated field and women were pushed to the fringes of the industry.
Changing the Narrative
It’s time to change the narrative around who belongs in brewing—whether it’s women, alcohol-free beer or anyone else who doesn’t fit the traditional brewer stereotype. The craft beer scene is at its best when it’s diverse, inclusive and open to new ideas!
At Nirvana Brewery, we’re raising a glass to the future of brewing. To Female-owned Breweries and the women reclaiming their place in the industry, breaking free from outdated stereotypes and to everyone who believes that beer is for all.
Buy Women Built
We’re not only celebrating female-owned breweries this International Women’s Day but all female-owned businesses. We are proud to be part of the Buy Women Built community of amazing female-owned brands. All built on the simple ethos that if you want to support women in business, the best way to do it is to buy from them. So go ahead and see what the amazing brands built by women have to offer you!
Here’s to breaking barriers, one beer (or brand) at a time. Cheers!
