Celebrating Oktoberfest in the UK

Why we love Oktoberfest

We LOVE beer here at Nirvana Brewery. Live and breathe the stuff, quite literally. But when it gets close to Oktoberfest, we get a little jig in our steps and start counting down the days. Oktoberfest really brings the place alive and the people together, drinking great beer and enjoying traditional German entertainment.

There’s nothing quite like celebrating out in a traditional German setting. But there are plenty of ways to celebrate the German beer festival in the UK, even if it’s just at home with a group of friends, or out in a pub garden – no matter the weather! That’s why we’ve put together a few ways you can celebrate Oktoberfest in the UK, and make the most out of this event.

History

First, a little bit of backstory. The festival began as a royal marriage celebration, way back in 1810. Specifically the marriage of the Crown Prince of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Funnily enough, the original festival took place over 5 days and didn’t include much beer at all. But it was such a success that the festival returned the following year and became an annual tradition, slowly taken over by temporary beer and other entertainment stalls from local beer producers which soon became the main event.

Now, Oktoberfest takes place over two weeks ending on the first Sunday in October, though it’s mostly celebrated throughout October. Most importantly – it’s all about beer and celebrating traditional German culture and music.

Celebrating Oktoberfest in the UK

Oktoberfest is not quite as widespread in the UK as it is in Germany or the US. But, that being said, there are still plenty of events taking place over the period throughout the UK that you can go to and experience the joy of the festival.

There’s an Oktoberfest tour, which travels throughout the country throughout October and into November, and is the perfect excuse for a dress-up!

Alternatively, it’s a great excuse to meet up with friends and have a good catch-up over some delicious (alcohol-free) beers at your house. It doesn’t have to be anything big or fancy, but the spirit of Oktoberfest is a joyous occasion. So just have fun!

Celebrate with Nirvana
